Sleeptember is month-long initiative by The Sleep Charity that aims to promote the importance of quality sleep. Ripple Education is promoting this cause as we believe everyone in our learning communities should get behind it. We truly understand the importance of sleep which is vital to our teaching staff’s health and children's growth and development.
With schools entering their second week, this is the perfect time to ensure everyone is prepared for the academic year ahead and equipped with resources to keep us all at our best.
The Importance of Sleep for Children
Getting enough restful sleep is absolutely crucial for children. Firstly, it leaves them feeling energised throughout the day. A good night's sleep enhances their cognitive and physical health and improves their memory and problem-solving skills. Secondly, proper sleep hygiene also boosts their immune system, increases concentration and ability to regulate themselves at school.
Did you know that doctors recommend primary school-age children need between 9 and 12 hours of sleep each night, while teenagers need between 8 and 10 hours? While that might sound like a lot, young people's bodies are growing and changing rapidly, and they need rest to help them grow and develop properly.
As the world gets busier and we all have more and more to do, it can be easy to develop poor sleeping habits and that's not something we want for our children. A lack of sleep in children can cause difficulties concentrating in school as well as attention and behavioural problems. In addition, there are direct links to a higher risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and mental health issues.
The Importance of Sleep for Teachers
As a teacher, our job is never done. There's always planning to do, work to mark, lessons to prepare and pupils to check in on. Finding time for everything can be challenging but here's the thing: sleep is one of the most powerful tools to avoid the burnout that so many teachers know all too well.
It's no secret that teachers have heavy workloads and it is precisely why we must try our best to prioritise sleep. When well-rested, we have more energy to tackle all the tasks on the never ending to-do list, be able to think more clearly and make better decisions in the classroom.
Of course, it can be challenging to prioritise sleep. Especially if you have children of your own or if you're juggling additional responsibilities. Remember that, by caring for ourselves, we also care for our pupils. They need us to be at our best, which means getting enough rest. So, try to carve out some time each night to wind down, relax, and get quality sleep.
